When we look at life these days we pay for a service or a product and have high levels of expectation and when this is not exceeded it is disappointing and this can include a multitude of things like buying a new car, replacing the dishwasher or even investing in teeth whitening services.
In this article we discuss the bleaching trays which whiten the teeth and what customers have reported back to me over the years.
The basic issue with the bleaching trays is three elements. The first is the build up of sensitivity, second is the discipline of using the trays whilst you are sleeping for fourteen nights and lastly is avoiding anything that is likely to re-stain the teeth needs to be avoided so let us look at the detail.
Build up of sensitivity
When you are asking the pores of the enamel to open to remove the staining is fine and essentially how teeth whitening works but the challenge here is that the micro pores will stay open for the duration of the treatment and therefore this can create the build up of sensitivity. Now when the sensitivity starts it is quite painful and therefore the natural instinct is to stop whatever you are doing which is creating the pain. Now if the sensitivity occurs after a few days of using the trays then the program stops and the results gained will be marginalised by only using the whitening trays for the time prior to when sensitivity started.
Also this sensation is not comfortable and therefore puts people off using the trays ,which is the whole purpose of buying them so you can re-use for the future.
Disciplined approach during program
When the pores of the enamel are open this invariably means the teeth are easy to re-stain by everyday things like cola, red wine, caffeine like red bull, coffee, tea and smoking will all contribute to them re-staining. So the rules are during the fourteen days we need to avoid anything with colourants and only consume natural colorants like water, milk, chicken, rice, pasta etc etc. Now try avoiding tea or coffee for two week which is quite difficult for many of us. The problem is that if we do not then the teeth are going to re-stain and we are back to where we started before investing the bleaching trays.
Changing our sleep pattern
Wearing the trays for fourteen nights sounds straight forward but for many of us who sleep with our mouth open having to wear trays which are made in a lab to suit the shape of our mouths is quite difficult. We simply never need to have anything in our mouths when we sleep so trying to wear the gum trays is alien and can effect our sleep pattern. Now the desire for whiter teeth is one thing but compromising our sleep for many is not going to happen.
Summary
I am not saying here the bleaching trays do not work but there are practical challenges that need to be considered but in any event always seek your advise of the dentist before embarking on a program.
