The default statement of basic EFT is “I deeply and completely accept myself". This statement leads to acceptance, which in turn allows change. Once the acceptance mode is on, new possibilities lay open. From bouncing back to one’s original emotional state, regaining adeptness for sound judgment, obtaining better health condition, to developing a broader perspective in life and improving one’s attitude towards problems.

However, it becomes difficult to make EFT work when the patient has reasons to hold onto his issue. For instance, when the patient’s health condition draws a lot of attention or consideration which he could not get otherwise, or when the patient is too preoccupied with his struggle against reality. We call this a secondary gain or benefit. An experienced EFT practitioner should be able to spot such blocks and overcome them most of the time.

Likewise, skepticism can be a problem. Some practitioners who are new to EFT can become a skeptic. Naturally, this causes them to get lower rate of success using the energy therapy. He may even influence the patient to some degree of doubtfulness. When the patient is unresponsive, it can be rather difficult for him to cooperate and achieve the desired result.

In all versions of energy procedures, someone's enthusiasm can definitely affect another person’s perception and ascertain the success rate. Over time, practitioners develop a deep sense of confidence and understanding about how EFT works at its best. They become
persistent and learn to investigate on the core issues. As a result, they bring positive results even with the most cynical patients. Their best shot is to go with their patient’s view of reality and then to regulate it accordingly.

Although EFT does not work on a belief system, open-mindedness in the procedure itself would be a great start. Upon self-acceptance and submission to the procedure, a new life filled with hope may begin. New possibilities that did not exist while mired in the struggle against your problems will emerge and work to your advantage.

Moreover, the fundamental steps in this procedure must be correctly followed and performed. Intervening in the body’s energy system through the meridian points has a profound effect. When a disrupted energy system is calmed and relieved by tapping on these points, the patient ceases to experience pain and/or unfavorable emotions from the original memory or thought. Tapping in EFT is an effective method of freeing oneself of irrational fears, addictions and negative states of being. Without tuning in or thinking about the problem that created energy disruptions, however, EFT does nothing. Likewise, the use of the Set Up and Reminder Phrases which are self acceptance affirmation must accompany the whole therapy as they play great roles in helping the patient handle his emotions on the issues on hand.

Notably, EFT is only limited by one’s own limitations. The key to its efficiency lies in the patient’s self-acceptance, open-mindedness to the whole therapy, and acknowledgment that he can heal himself through the guidance of the EFT therapist.
